Description: Ferry slip with train, December 1879

In1879 when the first passenger trains were operating over the newly completed line between Oakland and Sacramento they were ferried across the Carquinez Straits on the steamer "Solano". This boat was then the largest ferry in the world, and remained so until replaced by the "Contra Costa" in 1914, for the Southern Pacific Railroad. At that time additional slips were built at Port Costa and Benicia. Both ferries were dismantled upon the completion of the Martinez-Benicia railroad bridge Nov 1, 1930
