Exploring Upton Sinclair:
The
Story of my Historical Detection
Join fellow CCCHS members and guests for an enjoyable luncheon followed by an informative and entertaining talk concerning a pioneer, muckraking author and notable Californian. Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, revealed filthy conditions in the meat-packing industry and led to passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. In 1934, he was a candidate for Governor of California, running on a revolutionary Democratic platform called End Poverty in California (EPIC). Although derided by many voters as a crank, he nearly beat Frank F. Merriam.
Our speaker will be
LAUREN COODLEY, Professor of History and Psychology at Napa Valley College. She
is the author of The Land of Orange Groves and Jails: Upton Sinclair’s
California, a work based on more than ten years of research.
